Unemployment

Steps to Take When Becoming Unemployed

While there was a time in this country when people would spend decades at the same job without fear of or even ever contemplating the possibility of losing their job or what they would need to do should they find themselves suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed. Well those days are done, and the simple fact of the matter is that in today’s society, most people are going to find themselves in times of unemployment as well as find themselves in multiple different job occupations throughout their lives. Knowing that you are just like everyone else in the sense that you are unemployed and looking for work, can bring a sense of relief to many just knowing that they are literally not alone and there are millions of people who find themselves in the same situation you do. With all of this said, here are some actual concrete steps you can take to help you to maintain while unemployed as well as to get back on your feet as soon as possible:

  • It is essential that you get to the unemployment office or visit your state sanctioned website to file for unemployment benefits and avoid a lapse in your ability to pay your bills and maintain your lifestyle
  • Depending upon which state you reside, it is possible that you can collect unemployment and still get a job offer through a temp. agency. Go sign up at your local temp. agency to attempt to get yourself some sort of income flowing in.
  • Did you know that there are some (not all) temp. agencies that will actually offer you benefits provided you have worked a previously specified number of hours. Also, you can sign up with as many agencies as available to you so you can get two days of work from one, one day of work from another, and so on…
  • Temp. agencies often times will also lead to a more permanent employment opportunity provided the company and you are happy with the situation.
  • Check the jobs websites and listings often and consistently as there are quite literally new jobs being offered by the minute. Being one of the first to apply and get your name and job history seen will only strengthen your chances of receiving an interview and/or a job offer.
