The New York State Department of Labor is the main New York agency for unemployment. Residents used to have to go their local New York unemployment office to apply for benefits. Technology has now made the process easier.

The easiest way to apply for benefits through the New York department of unemployment is online. The site is located at https://ui.labor.state.ny.us/UBC/home.do?FF_LOCALE=1. People should apply weekdays 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, Saturday all day and Sunday until 7 pm.

New York State has also created regional call centers where people can call a phone number for unemployment. The unemployment numbers are 1-888-209-8124 for state residents and 1-877-358-5306 for all others. Applicants should call between 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays. When an applicant dials the phone number to unemployment, translation services are offered in several different languages.

When applicants call the New York office of unemployment to file a claim they will need their Social Security number, driver license, mailing address, day time phone number, names and addresses employers for the past one and a half years, and most recent W-2 forms. Applicants can choose to have direct deposit to their bank account. First time applicants need to create a personal identification number for unemployment.

People should apply for New York office unemployment benefits if they have lost employment through no fault of their own, are ready to work, have lost a job because lack of work, or could not perform job duties. One unemployment number people should know is that they need to have worked in the state within the last eighteen months.

Applicants may not be eligible if they were terminated for violating rules of their employer or were purposely absent from work consistently. The New York unemployment agency can provide job search and career transition services for applicants and recipients.
