New Hampshire Residents Can Access Unemployment Help

America’s rising jobless rate is a source of concern for many of our nation’s families. As an uncertain economy looms, New Hampshire residents are worried about how they will be able to safeguard their financial future during these critical times.

Filing an application for unemployment insurance is one way for jobless men and women to fill the money gap while they search for work. The New Hampshire Department of Employment Security (NHES) is a federally funded state agency which oversees the payment of benefits to those who are either unemployed or underemployed through no fault of their own.

In New Hampshire, the first step to apply for unemployment compensation is to register online for an account at the NHES website: The menu at the site will direct you to a link where you can create a new account and select a user name and password. You will then be able to log in to file a new unemployment application, as well as to access existing claims and to file weekly continued claims.

The unemployment application will take about 25 minutes to complete online. Don’t sign off until you’ve received the confirmation number which assures you that your application has been completed successfully. If you don’t finish the online application within 24 hours, the file will be deleted and you will have to begin again. The online system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Once submitted, your claim will be reviewed to assure that you are eligible for benefits. To receive unemployment payments, you must file continuing claims by following the instructions you received when you first filed online. Because of the large number of applications received, it may take as long as four weeks before you begin receiving unemployment benefits.

Many resources are available to help you with the application process. If you have questions about the process or about your eligibility for payments, you can speak to a customer service representative in the department’s call center at the toll-free number: 1-800-266-2252.

The NHES main office is located in Manchester, N.H. However, there are 13 local offices around the state where you can find answers to your unemployment questions. The state’s website has a link to information about those offices at: The office locations, phone and FAX numbers, the names of the towns served by the office and driving directions are available at that site.
