Apply and Receive Montana Unemployment Benefits

If you are facing unemployment and the financial difficulties that follow, you know what a stressful time it can be, particularly now during this day and age of economic uncertainty. Fortunately, you may be eligible to receive unemployment benefits to help ease the burden until you are able to find employment again. You may apply for unemployment in the state of Montana either by telephone or online.

To receive unemployment compensation in Montana, workers must be unemployed through no fault of their own or have a valid reason for being unemployed. Claimants must also actively seek employment and be able to work while receiving unemployment benefits.

There, in addition to filing initial claims you will also be able to reactive claims, file biweekly claims, view information, and print tax information.

The information you will need in order to fill out an Montana unemployment application completely include your Social Security number, birth date, your contact information including an email address if applicable, and the contact information for any employers you may have had since April 1, 2010. You will also need to list the dates of your previous employment.

In Montana, if you wish to receive your unemployment benefits by direct deposit you must also provide the department with your bank account information. Non US citizens and ex-military members will also need to provide the necessary paperwork during the initial filing process.

To file a Montana application for unemployment by phone, choose the "Telephone claim filing" link from the main page and select one of two phone numbers to use based on your location. For the western side of the state, call the Helena center at 406-444-2545 while workers in the eastern side should call the Billings center at 406-247-1000.

To file an unemployment application by phone, call either claims processing center during the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and on Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Both centers will be closed during all state and federal holidays.
