Mississippi Unemployment Insurance Benefits

As if losing a job isn't stressful enough, now you may be faced with financial difficulties in this day and age of an uncertain economy and inflated prices. Fortunately in the US, each state has an unemployment compensation program to take advantage of if qualified. In Mississippi unemployment compensation may be applied for online, in person, or over the telephone.

To determine eligibility for unemployment compensation in the state of Mississippi the unemployment claims office will ask for information including the details regarding your work history. The first four out of the last five quarters in the calendar year will be used to determine the amount of your benefits. Currently, the maximum amount you may be eligible per week for a Mississippi claim for unemployment is $235 with a minimum of $30.

You will also have to show the department that you are unemployed through no fault of your own and you also must actively be looking for work.

When you contact unemployment via any method you will need to provide your Social Security number, address, phone number, and the dates of your employment.

To file Mississippi unemployment claims by phone, call the state's comprehensive processing system known as MITS or Mississippi Interactive Telephone System. The phone system accepts calls any time of day and instructions are given in either English or Spanish. Simply follow the prompts answering questions using your touchtone, non-cellular phone.

To file for compensation for unemployment using the Internet, use the state's online system by logging onto http://www.mdes.ms.gov/. Choose one of the links under the "Unemployment Services" tab to begin. Choosing "Online Services" will prompt you to create a user ID and password allowing you to easily access the system in the future.

Remember to keep track of when it is time to file your weekly claim for unemployment otherwise your benefits may be adversely affected if you are late filing. For the purpose of unemployment claims, weeks start on Sundays at 12:00 am and end on Saturday nights at 11:59 pm.
