How to File for Maryland Unemployment Online

Maryland offers most of its unemployment services online, including initial online unemployment filing. Before filing for unemployment online, however, you should familiarize yourself with the requirements to collect unemployment insurance (UI) in Maryland and you should make certain that you have gathered all of the necessary materials before beginning your application.

Determine Your Eligibility for UI

To be considered eligible for UI in Maryland, you must be a resident of the state of Maryland, must have earned income through working in the state, must not be disabled, must be ready and able to work, must be actively searching for new employment and must have lost your job through no fault of your own.

There are additional factors that may interfere with your ability to participate in online unemployment filing even if you have a general eligibility for UI benefits. In order to submit an online unemployment benefits application, you must have worked and earned wages only in the state of Maryland in the previous 18 months, you must have worked for fewer than four employers over that same period, you must not have filed for UI in another state during that period, and you must not have been employed by the Federal Government during that period. If you don't qualify for online unemployment filing, you may contact the Maryland UI claims center by telephone instead.

Information to Gather Before You Apply

Before applying for unemployment services online, you'll want to have the following information gathered together:

  • your mailing address and social security number
  • a contact number
  • proof of your legal alien status if you are not a US citizen
  • the date of birth, social security number and names of any dependents under the age of 16
  • the name, address and dates of employment for any employers you have worked for in the previous 18 months
  • if you are seeking employment through a union, make certain to have your hiring hall number
  • if within the previous 18 months you were employed by the US military, have your DD214, Member 4 available

Applying for Unemployment Online

Once you've gathered the information you'll need for the online unemployment application, go to the Maryland UI office's online application page.
