Louisiana Unemployment Insurance Benefits

During these difficult financial times, many people struggle to support their families. In Louisiana, thousands of unemployed workers depend on unemployment compensation. These benefits temporarily provide a source of income to workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own. However, not every eligible worker claims unemployment. Some workers do not file unemployment claims, either because they do not understand how to file or because they think the application process is too complicated. In actuality, filing an online claim for unemployment is simple.

Filing an Unemployment Claim

To complete an online unemployment application, visit the Louisiana Workforce Commission website at http://www.laworks.net/UnemploymentInsurance/UI_Claimants.asp. From the website, choose the option to file a new claim. This will take you to the online application. Several of the application questions pertain to claimant contact information, such as name, address and phone number. However, you will also be required to answer questions pertaining to your job history. Before beginning the application, gather the following documents and information:

  • Social security number
  • Name, phone number and address for all jobs held in the past 18 months
  • Name and contact phone number for claimant’s union hall, only if applicable
  • Alien registration number, for non-citizens only
  • A valid e-mail address (not mandatory)

The online application is simple, and it even offers help text on each page in case you have questions. The system will also allow you to save information and complete your unfinished application later. It is important to remember that if you stay on any one page for a minimum of 30 minutes, then your session will time out and you may lose information already entered. Once you have finished your application, you will receive a confirmation number.

After your compensation for unemployment claim has been processed, you will receive notification in the mail informing you of whether or not you are eligible to receive benefits. If you are eligible, you must remember to certify via phone each week that you are unemployed by calling the Easy Call service at 1-866-783-5567. The certification process is simple, and you must answer a few questions over the phone. However, you may only call Tuesday through Saturday to certify; the system is unavailable on Mondays.

Though the Louisiana Works website contains a Frequently Asked Questions section, some claimants may have additional questions or concerns. To contact unemployment services representatives regarding a question or problem, call 1-866-783-5567.
