Hawaii Unemployment Agency Contact Information

As Hawaii's economy continues to struggle, and unemployment continues to rise, you may find yourself unexpectedly without a job. If you are unemployed through no fault of your own, you may be entitled to unemployment benefits by the state of Hawaii, administered by the Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. This is Hawaii’s agency for unemployment, and all filings are made through them.

Although the process of filing a claim may vary dependent on the type of claim, most applicants can start by calling Hawaii’s department of unemployment. The Hawaii office of unemployment phone number is 643-5555 (within Hawaii) or 1-877-215-5793 (outside Hawaii). By calling, you can make a Hawaii Tele-Claim for unemployment benefits. After providing information to an automated system, you will participate in a brief telephone interview with a customer service representative. This can take 10-20 minutes.

A few days after your initial Tele-Claim, you will receive an informational packet in the mail with additional instructions and forms to be filled out and returned to the designed Hawaii unemployment office. At this point you must also register to work with the state of Hawaii, usually by posting your resume on HireNet Hawaii, Hawaii's online job board. While receiving benefits, you will need to make at least three job contacts per week.

After your paperwork is approved, you will begin filing weekly, and then bi-weekly, claim certifications in order to receive your Hawaii unemployment benefits. These may also be filed over the phone with your local unemployment office. The phone number for the unemployment agency you can make weekly filings at is 643-5555 (within Hawaii) or 1-877-215-5793 (outside Hawaii).

If you are denied benefits, you may file an appeal. A hearing will be scheduled within 2 to 4 weeks, and a decision will be made within 1 to 2 weeks of the hearing. If you are not successful in your appeal, you may appeal for further judicial review in the Hawaii Circuit Court.

In addition to the above phone numbers, you may also contact Hawaii’s unemployment office via e-mail. Although each island has several offices, you can address general inquiries to the office located in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The unemployment agency e-mail address is dlir.ui.honolulu@hawaii.gov. You can find the unemployment agency e-mail address for other Hawaii offices by visiting them on the web at http://hawaii.gov/labor/ui/ui/hawaii-office-locations-1 and clicking on the island you are interested in viewing information for.
