Apply and Receive Florida Unemployment

File an Initial Claim

The first step to take when you need to apply for Florida unemployment compensation benefits is to file an Initial Claim online. The online application for unemployment can be found on the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation website, http://www.floridajobs.org/unemployment/

When filing your unemployment application, you will need this information:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • The name, address, and phone number of all of your employers during the last 18 months.
  • The dates you worked for each of these employers.
  • Your gross earnings from each employer.
  • Your Driver’s License number or State I.D. number.
  • Your Alien Registration number and the expiration date of your work permit, if you are not a U.S. citizen.
  • Your member 4, DD-214 if you were on active duty in the military in the last two years.
  • Your SF-50 or SF-8 form, if you were employed by the federal government in the last two years.
  • A check or deposit slip associated with your checking or savings account, if you are interested in setting up direct deposit.

*If you do not have access to the internet, you can go to your nearest One-Stop Career Center and use a computer there to file your unemployment application or to ask about unemployment services.

File your Weekly Certification and Work Verification

After you have applied for unemployment, you will receive a letter in the mail informing you of the date when you must file your Weekly Certification online. The first week following the filing of your unemployment application is considered a “waiting week.” During a waiting week, you must file your weekly certification, but you will not be paid for this week.

Choose your desired method of payment

In order to receive unemployment benefits you must either activate a special debit card that will be mailed out to you or you must apply for direct deposit. If you choose to set up direct deposit, you must login to your account, on the FAWI website, and click on the link “Debit Card, Direct Deposit, Pin – Create or Change.”
